Akron Photos- Part Two

I just realized I never published this post, even though it was more or less ready.

Here are more photos of Akron and area. I love how quaint this place is. I never in my life thought I would actually see an Amish horse and buggy in real life!

Above is a typical picture of the countryside here, which you can easily see by just walking a few blocks in any give direction.
Below are some pictures of the town closest to Akron, Ephrata. I love the main street with the old buildings that are all fixed up.

I couldn't decide if I liked the color or the black and white better so I thought I would let you all vote :)

And last but not least, the buggy!

A Glimpse of my Africa

I am at the office today and thought I would take advantage of it and upload some photos. Naturally I am not in any of them :) and I have not edited any of them.

Everyone is signing together to encourage those who are
pounding in stakes with rocks (aka Jodi's Hammer).

The women are digging planting stations.
We set up a timed race between the men and women.

One of the many mommas who have welcomed me.
Those in this village have already given me a Swahili name,
Mamma Mamvula. It more or less means Women of Rain.
Ma is almost the same as women and mvulu means rain.
They gave me this name because it had not rained for a month prior to my arriving even though it is the rainy season right now. Within 2 days of me coming to Dodoma it rained everyday for 6 days.
I am honored to have already received a Swahili name from one of the
communities that I will be working with.

2 little boys who followed us everywhere as we were discussing
with the village group the best place to build the next sand dam.

The picture below is the view up-river of where one of the
sand dams will be built this year.

And that is a quick glimpse of Africa for you.

Sand Dam Site

Just wanted to let you all know that one of my colleagues Don has set up a blog for the sand dam project here in Dodoma. I will most likely be taking over the blog over the next few months. Don has done a great job setting up this site and it is full of information.
Enjoy :)

Overwhelmed in Africa

I spent my first week in Arusha with Simeon and Janelle and their little guy Malachi who is 8 months old. They are a wonderful couple who made me feel so at home the minute I walked in (at 11pm). The ECHO conference was a great way to meet so many people in the same field, but I feel I did not truly benefit because I was too tired and overwhelmed by the newness of everything. Oh well, that’s the way she goes :)

For the first three days here in Dodoma I have been spending the day out at Chididomo (which is about a 45 minute drive and someday I will post pictures of the ‘road’). Grant (South Africa) and Graham (Arusha) are here to teach the local people about Farming Gods Way. I am very grateful that Grant and Graham were here to give this training season to the people as I have learned a lot too.

Sitting at the back of the class Graham and Grant asked the group if any of them have stood in line for food aid at some point in their lives. Tears filled my eyes when I saw that every hand in the room of 40 some people went up, except for those of us who were white. I am still not sure exactly how I feel about that fact, but it hurts. It is like all those TV ads but this made it so real for me.

I know have some idea of where to start. We are setting up demonstration gardens at the Chididomo school so I have a place to gather people and teach them. I am looking forward to learning from the people more details of how they farm and how we can build on that so they are more fruitful. We will have 9 demo gardens to start with and may increase it to 12.

On Wednesday we planted our Well Watered Garden with the group that has been learning about Farming Gods Way this week from Grant and Graham. It was my first test to see how well I can handle the heat and I think I passed (although I think I have a little bit of heat exhaustion and slightly burnt). I have no idea how hot it was, most likely mid 30’s, and by the end of the day I was wiped. 8pm and I am ready for bed!

There is so much more I could write and I know I could give many more details, but this will have to do for this week. And hopefully there will a few pictures soon :)

Gratitude of the Week

Yesterday in our session on 'Care for Yourself while in Service' one of the suggestions was to write a gratitude journal. This is so that when you are feeling down and out you will have something to remind you of all the good things. So I decided that I would share with all of you weekly one thing I am grateful for.

This week I am grateful for all the amazing people I have met. Friendships that have begun and will continue and for the love and support that they have given me (and hopefully I have given them in return). Thank you also for sharing your stories and for all the laughs!

Akron Photos- Part One

Here are some photos from the first week here in Akron from the MCC campus. It has snowed a lot since we arrived and it has created some great scenery.

Toby built this snowman with help from his wife Yasmine who is from El Salvador

This might be one of my favorites so far :)

I love the way the snow on the roof is hanging over as  it started to slide off the roof during the warmth of the day.

I hope to put up more tomorrow from Akron and area.

Farewell Dinner

Here are a few pics from the farewell dinner that Carissa and Cynthia organized before I left. We had a great meal at La Bamba (my favorite Mexican restaurant in Saskatoon) and fantastic company.

Thank you all for your love, support and prayers :)

Reflections from Akron

So I made it to Akron along with all three of my bags :)

As soon as I met the first few people I would be spending my two weeks here with, I knew I had made the right decision. I was somewhat shocked that I was not the only one here around my age and single preparing to go overseas to work for three years! Out of 15 there are 5 of us (interestingly we are also all female). But knowing I am not the only one who has made what some may call 'this crazy decision to move overseas and work all by yourself and not know anyone there!' reaffirms my decision and that what I am doing is right for me.

As we sit at our tables during the season I realize how much I have been missing these thought provoking and motivational conversations. They are open, honest and insightful. They are accepting of the differences (because we are all very different and come from different backgrounds and experiences) but also question you so you are forced to look deeper into yourself. A lot of the conversations and discussions revolve around peace and justice and I do not think I have ever discussed peace and justice with anyone in the past (I hope to right more about this if Jimmy is okay with it). We discuss where we have been and where we are going, our personal experiences and how they will benefit us or hamper us. Around the dinner table we talk about current events, Canadian and American politics (I think I finally understand what the Tea Party is!). We talk about family and friends, past careers, hopes and dreams.

Lastly but not least there is a lot of laughter!

Tears

Last week when I said goodbye to my Grandma Holzman I cried a little as I walked away. I have such fond memories playing at her house and spending a good portion of the summer with her and Grandpa at the lake when I was little. I most likely will never see her again.

I almost cried today for the first time this week. I gave my niece a big hug and said 'I love you,' which I think might be the first time I ever said that to her. I had tears in my eyes. It has been a hard day. My younger nephew Beckett has been asking me questions all week about Africa, where it is and why I am going there. His older brother Jack has said hardly a word about it until this morning. We were all sitting in the living room, the boys playing and us adults having our morning coffee when all of a sudden Jack starts crying 'I don't want Aunty Jodi to go to Africa!' At first I thought he was upset because his dad had turned the TV off. When I realized why he was so upset it almost broke my heart!

Even though I am leaving tomorrow morning I am so grateful I had this week to spend with my brother and his family. The boys mean so much to me and I love playing with them and watching them play after they have worn me out :) I can't think of a better way to have spent my last few days!

I am sure that there will be more tears tonight, but oh well :)

The Bags are Packed

The bags are packed! That mountain I showed earlier was greatly reduced thanks to my sister-in-law Carissa and best friend Cynthia. They made me go through everything on the bed and floor and I discarded close to half. We had a few laughs too. I had one shirt I wanted to take and Carissa mentioned she has never seen me wear it, to which I responded "that's cause it only fits me when I am skinny as its kinda clingy." Needless to say she made me put it in the discard pile, which is a good call :) Really Jodi? You never wear cause its clingy? Why on earth I had it the pile to take to begin with, I have no idea!?!?

Here are few pics of the piles in progress and the end result.

Here is my discard pile, some I will pack and store
others I will give away

Notice the smaller piles and no shoes?
They made me get rid of 3/4 of the shoes
in the original pile

The piles are more organized and smaller now
Less overwhelming!

The final result. Two bags that weigh 45lbs each!

And now I'm off to pack and clean my house so I can move out on Sunday.

Overwhelmed

I feel so overwhelmed right now. I am trying to pack my two bags to take to Tanzania and it may just be the end of me! The pile of stuff I want to take with me looks little a mountain, its almost funny. I know I don't need to take everything in this pile with me but I want to. :(

My packing room aka my spare bedroom

What I find funny is that when I went backpacking in Central America I had one bag for three months. That equals three pairs of pants, a couple pairs of shorts, a few t-shirts and tank tops. I was perfectly fine with that wardrobe :) but for some reason I think that this time I need to take everything in my closet and then some!
My pile of shoes that I want to bring.
I love shoes because they always fit and look
good no matter how your feeling :)

Thank goodness my girlfriend Cynthia is coming over to help this afternoon. She will at least be able to give me some moral support and laugh with and at me! Just what I need :)
